After retiring from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Derek joined a billion-dollar Utah-based tech start-up as Senior Vice President, Security and Compliance. In this position, Derek created a robust physical, personnel, and network security program protecting the sensitive nature of the organization’s Artificial Intelligence processes and data. He also developed independent compliance programs around the applicable CJIS and HIPAA standards.

 

In his last position as Chief Security Officer for the FBI’s Salt Lake City Division, Derek was responsible for all physical, personnel, and network security concerns within a three- state area. This included maintaining the security of over 400 FBI personnel, its 17 different secured facilities, and its Top Secret, Secret and Unclassified data networks. He was also responsible for compliance, governance, and policy issues.

 

Derek served as a Behavioral Analysis Coordinator where he conducted in-depth threat assessments of Persons of Interest, consulted with local law enforcement on cold case homicides, and advised local businesses, schools, and houses of worship on targeted violence threat mitigation strategies.

 

Derek served as a SWAT agent for the FBI for 18 years where he planned and executed high-risk arrests and supported law enforcement functions during domestic national disaster responses. He was deployed numerous times to Afghanistan in support of U.S. Special Operations Forces’ counterterrorism efforts in the region.

 

As a Senior Team Leader for the FBI Director’s Protective Detail for seven years, Derek led both high profile and low visibility protective missions, conducted facility and residential security surveys as well as threat mitigation efforts, and developed and exploited intelligence streams around the world. His duties also included critical liaison with foreign dignitaries, political adversaries, and in some cases, members of royalty.

 

Derek also led the FBI's multi-million-dollar High Risk Deployment Training program (HRDT). With a team of 20 training professionals, he prepared over 1,500 FBI personnel for assignments to high-risk locations and active war zones worldwide. Derek managed and instructed courses in situational awareness, personal/travel security, counter-surveillance, intelligence gathering and exploitation as well as combat medicine.

 

As a case agent, Derek successfully worked a variety of disciplines including kidnapping, bank robbery, counterterrorism, and complex multi-national enterprise investigations targeting organized crime and narcotics.

 

Derek earned his JD from the University of San Diego, School of Law and previously specialized in Regulatory and Employment Law practice areas.
